On the cartographic canvas of the country, lie two prominent tourist havens, Srinagar in Kashmir and Arambol in Goa, separated by a vast expanse of approximately 2600 kilometers. Both regions are celebrated for their distinctive natural allure. While Srinagar captivates with its ethereal vistas cradled in the embrace of the Himalayas, Arambol beckons with its secluded shores, offering an oasis of serenity to weary travelers seeking solace amidst the waves.

Both the tourist places have their own different vibrant cultures, stunning natural landscapes, and natural surroundings, yet the connection between Kashmir and Arambol, particularly through the involvement of Kashmiris in the markets of Arambol, highlights the diverse cultural influences present in Goa and the intermingling of communities from different parts of India.

Last month I had a chance to visit Goa, along with my other two co-workers Mr. Ajaz War and Rameez Makhdoomu, only at the Airport we meet Kashmir’s lookalike hospitality, with Mr. Nikhil Wagh, senior Manager at Goa Shipyard Limited welcoming with us open arms and some beautiful gifts. This gesture instantly uplifted our moods in an unfamiliar place.

Upon reaching the hotel at Arambol, North Goa via the roads surrounded by forests some 60-70kms from the Airport we were thrilled to witness markets dominated by the Kashmiris enhancing the overall appeal of the destination.

The connection between Kashmir and Arambol through the presence of Kashmiri vendors in Arambol’s markets highlights the interconnectedness of India’s diverse regions and the role of cultural exchange and economic interaction in shaping local communities and tourism destinations.

Javaid Ahmad Magray, a resident of Srinagar, is among the hundreds of people who have a second home in Arambol Goa, not only contributing to the cultural exchange but marking his contribution on the economic front between the two regions over the years.

Being Arambol an international tourist destination, Javaid owner of a leather products shop is now a master of dozens of languages, from the mellifluous tones of Russian to the lilting cadence of Ukrainian. He welcomes us at his home and his shop as well.

Opposite to his shop is “Beruza Arts” a shop of gemstones run by a septuagenarian, also from Kashmir Valley, running his business in Arambol for the last four decades. He had a tragedy last week as his young nephew who would help in business affairs left for heavenly abode, all sudden, the Kashmiri community members joined heads to dispatch the body of Amir (name changed) to his homeland Kashmir.

The shopkeepers would recognize us as Kashmiris either through our body language or their experience of dealing with different variety of global customers. They would invite us for meals or discounts on items.

Indeed, by embracing elements of Kashmiri cuisine, handicrafts, and gestures in the vibrant setting of Arambol, we cultivate a unique and enriching experience that offers a glimpse into the timeless allure of Kashmir while immersing ourselves in the bohemian charm of this coastal village in Goa, Arambol.

For travelers, experiencing a touch of Kashmir in Arambol can be a delightful fusion of cultures and experiences, blending the serene beauty of Kashmir with the laid-back bohemian vibe of Arambol.
