Despite being home to a vibrant and dynamic young population, local political parties in Kashmir have always struggled to harness the potential of youth leadership effectively. One of the primary obstacles hindering the implementation of a youth-centric leadership mandate is the deeply entrenched political hierarchy prevalent within Kashmiri parties.

In a place where bloodline succession in leadership is a tradition, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), often alleged as a “centric party of nepotism and favouritism,” recently announced a young leader, Waheed Ur Rehman Para, as its candidate from the Srinagar Constituency for the 2024 general elections. This move has infused a fresh landscape into Kashmiri politics, signifying a departure from conventional political strategies in the region.

Traditionally dominated by seasoned politicians, Kashmir’s political arena, even within the PDP, has often been criticized for its lack of representation and engagement with the youth demographic. However, with the PDP’s recent decision, a significant shift is underway, promising to bridge this generational gap and cultivate a more inclusive political environment.

The announcement has generated widespread enthusiasm and optimism among Kashmiri youth, who view it as a significant step towards meaningful participation and representation in governance.

Many have hailed the PDP’s move as a progressive leap forward, signaling a departure from entrenched political norms and a commitment to fostering genuine democratic principles. However, addressing the dominance of bloodline succession in leadership requires a multifaceted approach that addresses systemic inequalities, which other parties in their list of candidates have failed to do.

Speaking on the decision, a PDP leader while talking with Onlykashmir.in emphasized the importance of youth empowerment in fostering sustainable development and peace in Kashmir. “Our youth are not just the future of Kashmir; they are its present. Their voices, aspirations, and ideas must be heard and integrated into the fabric of our political discourse,” he stated.

“The lack of adequate institutional support and mentorship opportunities has left many aspiring young leaders disillusioned and disenchanted with the political process. Without proper guidance and resources, navigating the intricacies of party politics and electoral dynamics becomes an uphill battle for Kashmiri youth,” states Irfan Ahmad, a political worker.

“By mandating youth leadership roles within the party, the PDP seeks to harness the energy, creativity, and vision of young Kashmiris in shaping the future trajectory of the region,” he added.

“By investing in the next generation of leaders, Kashmir has the opportunity to transcend its tumultuous past and build a more equitable, inclusive, and prosperous future for all its citizens,” Ahmad concluded.
