We all know the majestic beauty of Kashmir makes this place a “Heaven on Earth.” However, the valley has not only captivating beauty in its fold but also a massive wonderful talent in every field among its inhabitants.

History is witness to the fact, that those Kashmiris who gave wings to their dreams out of the turbulences and hurdles have proved their mettle both on national and international levels in different fields, amongst is Khalid Wani, born in the then volatile area of Kashmir called Downtown, three decades ago.

Hailing from the narrow lanes of Safa Kadal area of Srinagar, today the downtowner Khalid is a frequent state guest to many developing countries, countries that are a distant dream of the youth of his age.

Khalid is a package of different talents, he is a successful entrepreneur, speaker, observer, manager, traveler, foodie, blogger, and whatnot a good human. These days Khalid Wani has come to relax at his homeland, Kashmir. During his visit, I had a conversation with him at a local restaurant in Srinagar. Here are the excerpts of our conversation in the form of questions and answers for the convenience of readers. I, the questioner, Bilal Bashir Bhat, and the interviewee Khalid Wani herein refer to BBB and KW respectively.

BBB: Tell us a bit about your birth, schooling, and parenting?
KW: I was born in Srinagar, at Lal Ded Hospital, where my life journey began. My early years were spent in Srinagar, a place filled with warmth and beauty, but also challenges that we all faced together. As the situation grew intense, my parents faced a pivotal moment. They made the courageous decision to leave behind their familiar lives and start anew in Delhi, a city unknown to us at the time. It was in the bustling streets of Delhi that I pursued my education, from schooling to college.
I proudly hold a degree in International Business and Finance from Jamia Millia Islamia. I owe an immeasurable debt of gratitude to my parents for the sacrifices they made. Their unwavering support, values, and love provided the foundation for the person I am today. Life presented its share of obstacles, but my parents’ guidance and principles have been my guiding light. These lessons have been instrumental in my successful journey as a business professional, reminding me that with determination and the right values, one can overcome any challenge.

BBB: What was the breakthrough of your success?
KW: The breakthrough to my success came when I embraced the freedom to make my own choices and take responsibility for them. In my early twenties, I had a significant milestone with my entertainment startup, which revolutionized the live music scene across India, both culturally and financially. But let me tell you, success is a journey with many facets. It’s about providing for my family, ensuring my team’s well-being, and finding happiness and contentment in what I do. It’s also about giving back and helping others to be self-sufficient. So, success for me is an evolving process, one that continues to inspire me to do more.

BBB: Tell us about your journey in entrepreneurship?
KW: My journey in entrepreneurship has been a dynamic and enriching experience. Over twenty years, I’ve ventured into various industries, including the Internet, Sports Management, Food Production, Fashion, Entertainment, Politics, and Automobile. Along this path, I’ve honed my skills in Marketing, Brand Management, Business Development, Strategy, Political Advisory, and Planning.
I’ve had the honor of hosting more than a hundred keynote sessions and participating in panel discussions. I’ve also conducted masterclasses on topics like Marketing, Leadership, Management, Startup Ecosystem, Fundraising, and Super Investor, often in collaboration with prestigious institutions like IIT Bombay. I take immense pride in the accolades I’ve received for my contributions to the Indian economy. As I embark on new endeavors, I’m driven to revolutionize the Indian employment ecosystem through an innovative business model that empowers those in lower socio-economic strata to achieve self-sufficiency and upward mobility.

BBB: What were the reasons, which forced you to start your journey outside Kashmir?
KW: Leaving Kashmir was a significant decision driven by the prevailing circumstances. As the situation in Kashmir grew increasingly challenging, my parents and I faced uncertainty and unrest. In search of stability, security, and opportunities, we made the difficult decision to relocate to Delhi, a city unknown to us at the time. It was a leap of faith, a fresh start in an unfamiliar territory with cultural differences, and a step towards a future hoping to be filled with possibilities.

BBB: You have been to Kashmir after two years, what changes have you observed?
KW: Returning to Kashmir after a two-year absence, I’ve witnessed a subtle yet significant shift in the landscape. While the breathtaking natural beauty remains untouched, there’s a palpable undercurrent of progress. The region seems more connected, with improved infrastructure and a burgeoning entrepreneurial spirit. Communities are resilient, adapting to challenges and fostering a sense of hope. This visit has strengthened my confidence in the potential for positive transformation.

BBB: Besides entrepreneurship what are your other interests?
KW: Beyond my entrepreneurial pursuits, I am an ardent advocate for exploring the world’s cultural tapestry. My interests span far and wide, from fostering global connections through networking with diverse communities to delving into art, history, and cuisine from around the world. I’m also passionate about sustainable initiatives, and collaborating with organizations on a global scale to drive positive environmental change. These interests not only enrich my life but also inform and inspire my approach to leadership and innovation.

BBB: As a successful person, do you also regret something or want to undo something?
KW: As a successful individual and an entrepreneur, I believe that life is a continuous journey of growth, failures, and learning. I wouldn’t use the term “regret,” I acknowledge that there were moments in my past where I could have taken a different decision or route. I see these experiences as priceless lessons that have shaped my path and will continue so in the future. Rather than dwelling on undoing the past, I focus on channeling these lessons into opportunities for personal and global betterment. It’s a perspective that aligns with my commitment to making a positive impact on a global scale, where every experience, even the challenging ones, contributes to my ongoing journey of leadership and growth.

BBB: How many countries you have been to, tell our audience about the felicitation you received so far?
KW: I was inquisitive enough to travel to almost every continent on this incredible journey of mine that has also helped me in my growth. When it comes to those awards and recognitions, Alhamdulillah, I’ve received quite a few, both on the national and global levels. To be honest, I don’t weigh myself or validate with these trophies. What really matters to me is the contribution I can make to my country and, the impact I can leave behind. While it’s nice to be acknowledged for my work, it’s the positive impact I can have around me that keeps me going.

BBB: Why not every Kashmiri can be Khalid Wani in respect of the level of your success, or close to that?
KW: It’s important to know that success takes time and effort. My journey hasn’t been easy, and it’s far from over. To help the youth of Kashmir embark on a similar path, I’d suggest focusing on education, continuous learning, and embracing opportunities. Cultivating resilience, networking, and having a clear vision are also key. Most importantly, stay true to your values, work hard, and never stop believing in your potential. Success may have different definitions for each person, but the journey starts with determination and perseverance.

BBB: How can you be helpful to the youth of Kashmir?
KW: I’m committed to supporting the youth of Kashmir on their journey to success. They can start by asking the right questions and, most importantly, by defining their goals. I’m here for them, and they can easily reach out through my website and social media channels. They can also access my talks on YouTube, which provide insights into common questions and challenges they might encounter. My aim is to provide guidance and inspiration to help them realize their full potential and achieve their dreams.

BBB: As you must be aware, over the years Kashmir youth at large have been addicted to drugs, do you have any mantra to deal with this issue?
KW: Addressing drug addiction among Kashmiri youth is indeed a complex challenge. While I may not possess a single mantra to solve this issue, I strongly believe in the power of awareness, education, and community support. It’s essential to engage with the youth, provide them with opportunities for personal growth, and offer rehabilitation services and therapy. Building a strong support system, both within families and the overall community, will help guide these young people away from addiction and towards healthier, more fulfilling lives.

BBB: Any plans/ engagements/ investments for Kashmir?
KW: Yes, I do have an interest in investing in projects that align with my vision and goals. However, it’s important to highlight that these investments will be made following set procedures and benchmarks. While I have a deep connection to the region and its people, the startups desiring investments will need to meet the standard provisions expected of any investor. I have already started investments in some projects that are advancing well, and I intend to continue exploring possibilities in the coming years. My approach to investment is somewhat conservative and focused on responsible growth and development.

BBB: A short message for our readers
KW: A heartfelt thank you to all the readers and the publication for giving me the opportunity to share my journey with everyone. Remember, life’s a journey, not a destination, so make it a scenic route, not a shortcut!

Undoubtedly the odyssey of Khalid Wani is quite interesting and teaches us several lessons of life, and management based on ups and downs, he is an inspiration and a mentor for youngsters especially the raw talent of downtownees. We wish him good luck in his future endeavors.
