Vatican City, May 8: In a historic moment for the Catholic Church, American Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost has been elected as the new Pope, becoming the first American to ascend to the papacy. Prevost, 69, succeeds Pope Francis, who stepped down citing health reasons.

Prevost previously served as the Prefect of the Dicastery for Bishops, one of the most influential positions within the Vatican, overseeing the appointment of bishops worldwide. Known for his pastoral approach, administrative acumen, and commitment to Church reforms, Prevost’s election signals a continuation of efforts to modernize and address critical global challenges facing Catholicism.

Shortly after his election, Prevost appeared before thousands gathered at St. Peter’s Square and chose the papal name Pope John Paul III, invoking the legacy of unity and global engagement associated with previous Popes John Paul I and II.

World leaders, religious figures, and millions of Catholics worldwide welcomed the announcement with messages of congratulations and prayers. The U.S. President, senior bishops, and Vatican observers hailed the move as a “historic bridge between continents” in a time of growing polarization.

In his first remarks, Pope John Paul III emphasized healing divisions, promoting peace, protecting the environment, and renewing the Church’s commitment to the poor and marginalized. “We must walk together, with courage and humility, guided by faith, hope, and love,” he said.

The formal inauguration ceremony is scheduled to take place at St. Peter’s Basilica later this week.
