Today Onlykashmir had a very important and candid interaction with one of the greatest personalities of India who has achieved a lot in the medical field and hence contributed to the health sector of the country.

That is none other than Dr Swapna Mishra, Director, Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Fortis Mohali, who is also a Robotic Laparoscopic and Cancer Surgeon. Dr Swapna Misra talks exclusively to Onlykashmir senior correspondent Sabahat Muqadas on the sidelines of a presser in Srinagar, here are some excerpts of the interaction.

Discussing a very important issue that is not only related to women of Kashmir but pertains to globally, PCOS Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome, Dr Swapna Misra stated that PCOS is a genetic environmental disease. 30% to 40% of girls are born with PCOS. But not everyone has a disease. The girls are not told to exercise. We are not checking what they are eating. Junk food is rising day by day. Artificial food is rising day by day. The addition of sweets is added day by day.

She said PCOS is curable; women who exercise and are having regular Periods will not have any problem with conception. The problem is when you start gaining weight when you do not exercise, when you are not checking your BMI that is the time you will have infertility and other issues.

Get your diet modified, go on a high protein, stay away from junk food, stay away from fried food and start exercising for at least one hour daily, five days a week, and you will not have PCOS. Say no to a sedentary lifestyle and yes to an active lifestyle diet, Swapna said.

When asked does PCOS has something to do with hypertension? Dr Swapna said PCOS will not cause hypertension, but any weight gain will cause hypertension.

Talking about Robotic Surgery, Dr Swapna said it’s an emerging field and it has great promise. This is a future surgery. I have been doing robotics since 2017. We have done more than 500 robotic surgeries. It is a surgery meant for saving organs.

She said earlier, removal of the ovary was the standardized treatment for women having cysts around their ovaries. However, in this particular case, to help the Patient conceive in future, Dr Misra decided to treat the Patient through Robot-aided Surgery.

We want you to have a normal life, but without giving you a cut. We give you four holes. In four holes we do the entire surgery because we are trained for that. We are experts for that 24 hours post-surgery, you go back home.

Discussing the benefits of Robot-aided Surgery, Dr Misra who has conducted more than 300 robotic surgeries said, “Robot-aided Surgery has been established as the gold standard procedure for almost all gynaecological surgeries — fibroids, endometriosis, vesicovaginal fistula, ovarian cyst, salpingo-oophorectomy, myomectomy, hysterectomy and all cancers of the uterus, ovary and cervix. Robotic-aided surgery has revolutionized the treatment of various gynaecological diseases.”

“48 hours post- robotic surgery, you can do whatever. Seven days post surgery you can go back to your job, your school, your college.” Dr Swapna said.
