Downtown’s most respected person Abdul Satar Gagru dies at 80

Death is inevitable, with no calendar, the deceased always left a blanket of grief that makes his/her admirers powerless and in the state of mourning, so is the case of Abdul Satar Gagru who breathed his last early Tuesday morning at his residence. He had been in declining health for the past two years.

Haji Abdul Satar Gagru, resident of Kadi Kadal, Old City’s Srinagar will be always remembered for his selfless and vigorous activities on different fronts including, social, political and religious.

Haji Abdul Satar Gagru would quote Quran and Hadith in every interaction, a deeply religious and visibly follows all the moral and ethical codes of Islam.

His deep devotion, knowledge and attachment with Jama Masjid Srinagar and his sincere efforts to spread the message of Islam via promoting the sermons of Mirwaizeen-e-Kashmir on different occasions are exemplary, he is among few, who remain affiliated with Mirwaizeen-e-Kashmir over the generations especially with the Mufasir-e-Quran Muhajir-e-Millat Mirwaiz Moulana Muhammad Yusuf Shah (RA), Mirwaiz Molvi Muhammad Farooq (RA) and the present Mirwaiz Umar Farooq.

On the political level, he faced hardships and interrogations and remained in incarceration several times. In 1965, when Mirwaiz Molvi Muhammad Farooq and entire leadership were imprisoned the late Haji Abdul Satar was also arrested.

Being enthusiastic, sincere, and vigorous on every front he earned much respect throughout his life which remained until his death. The participation of thousands of people in his Nimaz-e-Jinaza inside the premises of Jama Masjid Srinagar, barring the COVID threat reflects the love and affection of his well wishers. Haji Abdul Satar Sahib was laid to rest in his ancestral graveyard amid moist eyes.

Ah ! Haji Abdul Satar’s last wish that his Namaaz-e-Janazah should be led by Mirwaiz Umar Farooq remained unfilled due to the continued detention of later. Though, the Mirwaiz expressed sorrow and grief, terming the demise as a great loss.

The Mirwaiz Umar Farooq led Jammu and Kashmir Awami Action Committee expressed grief and sorrow over the demise of Haji Abdul Satar who was a long-time and senior member of the organization, a well-wisher of the Mirwaiz Family and a respected personality of the city.
