Custodial death of Youth triggers tension in Kashmir

Rizwan Pandit was a teacher at a private school, was picked up by the security agencies three days ago in connection with a militancy case.

Srinagar, Mar 19 (Only Kashmir): The custodial death of a Youth arrested by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) suspected in a militancy related case has triggered tension in Kashmir Valley.
According to the Police spokesman, in pursuance of terror case investigation, one suspect Rizwan Pandit of Awantipore was in police custody.
“The said person died in police custody. In this matter while following the procedure laid down in section 176 of crpc a magisterial enquiry is underway.”
Separately police investigation has also been initiated in the jurisdictional area of incident.
Meanwhile, soon after the death of Rizwan came to light, protests erupted in Old City area of Srinagar with shops and business establishments closing down their shutters.
The protestors blocked the roads and certain stay incidents of stone pelting.
Reacting to the incident, former Chief Minister of J&K, Omar Abdullah said, “Midnight raids, crackdowns, rampant arrests, custodial murders, denial of democratic right to choose a government. Kashmir continues to suffer the fallout of the disastrous PDP-BJP alliance and from the Modi government’s muscular approach to J&K.”


Hurriyat (M) Chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq took to the twitter stating, “Distraught at the brutal custodial killing of young Rizwan Ahmed of Awantipora. The brutal killing once again exposes the helplessness, vulnerability and insecurity to the lives of Kashmiri’s as impunity of the authorities keeps rising.”

Meanwhile, protests also erupted in native place of Rizwan in Awantipora in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pulwama district. (OK)
